Revelations that over 70 percent of the research carried over in Kenya, including by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has been funded by donors, which denies the country the much needed and valuable intellectual property rights, data ownership. There is need to ensure adequate domestic research funds mobilization and funding so that we can control our own research findings, innovations and outcomes for accelerated national development. Therefore, KEMRI is indeed right to seek more than 20 billion to fund its operations and processes, and the same should be extended to other research institutions, institutions of higher learning and other innovation centres. Research is important for national development has five advantages. One, it leads to innovations in the business and operations of a country. This brings in new products and services, improved processes and new ways of doing things hence efficiency, effectiveness and economy considerations.
Secondly, research and Development is an essential driver of socio-economic development through the aspects of innovation, invention and progress. Thirdly, research and development has been found to operationalize and drive profits for companies and business entities, which means they can become more profitable and hence create more jobs and employment opportunities for the country; and on the other hand, it brings about sustained well-being for consumers who get value for money and hence more savings, investments and hence development cycle. Well researched products and services adheres to healthy and environmental considerations, which means that there is harmony between the consumption of such products and services and the customers health and environment. Fourthly, through research and development, a country’s goods and services attain optimum productivity and product differentiation, which are central to competitive advantage, ensuring that companies and nations stay ahead of the pack for and through such products and hence ability to attain a bigger market share than the rivals. Through research therefore, unique products that support human life and civilization can be developed. Many products have been developed through research and it is important that Kenya develops other products needed for national and international consumption.
Fifth, research and development help in ensuring continuous improvement and adaptability of products and services. This is because in a rapidly changing environment, adaptability and improvement is key to staying competitive. Through research and development, companies and entities are able to refine and enhance their existing offerings. Through ongoing and continuous research and experimentation, entities can optimize their products, processes and customer experiences. This enables adequate response to the developmental needs, including improved technological and satisfaction levels.
